UMCI under construction in Detroit, will open in 2027

The University of Michigan Center for Innovation (UMCI) wants to drive job creation, economic development, and technological advancement in Detroit through interdisciplinary programs. The programs are designed to equip the workforce with AI literacy, technical proficiency, and essential soft skills. Our research, involved interviews with:

  • Detroit faculty

  • Industry professionals

  • Graduate students

  • Survey data from new graduates

While there were initial concerns regarding GenAI's uncertainties in classrooms and workplaces, feedback has shown cautious optimism, underlining its productivity potential.

Key insights reveal that technical and soft skills are needed and GenAI need to be regulated for ethical consideration. We recommend integrating AI into the curriculum for both skills and build strong relationships with local businesses to ensure graduates find work in Detroit.
